“Actually I dropped out,” KC explained with a slight shrug, sliding the drink across the bar toward the customer whom he’d struck up a conversation with. He wasn’t generally the bare-my-soul to strangers type, but the bar was mostly empty and they had asked how he had gotten into bartending. The story that he had started bartending during med-school to help pay tuition always raised the same question: Why was he still serving drinks instead of saving lives? He wasn’t entirely embarrassed by his answer, so much as he was tired of the uncomfortable and disappointed response the answer always got.
